A longstanding Clark Lake tradition continues.  Clark Lake Yacht Club sailboat races launched the first competition of the season last Sunday.  Two Hobies, a Sunfish and Rebel ran the course in this season opener.  The races are taking place each Sunday through August with the exception of Raft-O-Rama on Sunday, August 7th.  On that weekend, sailboat races will take place on Saturday.

In a call to all sailors at Clark Lake and beyond, Yacht Club Commodore Patrick O’Harris says members and non-members alike are invited to participate.  He adds “it’s free to everyone” and they are also offering a free post-race BBQ (burgers and dogs).

Patrick points out the word “race” shouldn’t intimidate anyone.  “For myself, it is merely a course to help me become a better sailor.”   All types of sailboats and all levels of expertise are welcomed.  A non-member could use one of the club boats, after signing a waiver of liability.  “Non-members are also welcome to crew a sailboat if they are not yet comfortable being captain of their own ship.”

Commenting on sailing, Patrick points to the growing number of sailboats moored at the Yacht Club.

How are sailboat races scored?  Two veteran members of the Yacht Club tell the story in this video.

The Yacht Club also has a Learn to Sail program, described in the video below.

Clark Lake has a strong sailing history.  At its peak, Fleet 58 had the largest number of Hobies in the United States. Some Clark Lakers can remember Yacht Club Sunday races that commanded everyone’s attention.  Class boats like Rebels, Interlakes, and Lightnings filled the lake.  Every September, the Fall Regatta draws participants across state lines and international borders.  This year’s Regatta has a special addition.  Details to follow.  To review the Yacht Club’s history, please click here.
